Masters Athlete Testing for Aptos
Aptos masters athletes (40+) who run Nisene Marks, Seacliff Beach, and Soquel San Jose Road know that longevity in trail running requires smart training. Our Santa Cruz facility is 15 minutes north. VO₂ max testing provides personalized zones for aerobic base building, threshold work, and recovery—so you keep running forest trails for years to come.
Why Aptos Masters Athletes Test
Nisene Marks demands sustained aerobic effort. After 40, recovery between hard efforts lengthens—training too hard on "easy" days undermines progress. Testing identifies your true Zone 2 ceiling (VT1) and lactate threshold (VT2). Train in the right zones for long forest runs, Loma Prieta climbs, and ultra prep without burning out.
Trail running longevity: Many Aptos masters are active retirees or semi-retired. Testing helps you train for decades, not just this season.
Aptos is the gateway to Forest of Nisene Marks. Masters athletes training here benefit from:
- • Zone 2 for long runs: Aptos Creek Trail, Loma Prieta Grade—sustainable aerobic effort
- • Threshold for climbs: Know when you cross from aerobic to unsustainable
- • Recovery zones: True easy pace for days between hard efforts
- • 15-minute drive: Highway 1 or Soquel Drive to Santa Cruz
VO₂ Max Test: $250 — Korr CardioCoach, 5-zone system, VT1/VT2, age-group norms. Self-powered treadmill ideal for runners. 45–60 minutes.
Masters athletes need more Zone 2 and less gray-zone training:
- • 80% of training in Zone 1–2 (aerobic base)
- • 20% in Zone 4–5 (threshold and VO₂ max)
- • Avoid Zone 3 "moderate" on easy days—it accumulates fatigue
- • Retest every 12–16 weeks as fitness and age shift zones
