Stress Fracture Recovery Testing

Professional fitness testing for stress fracture recovery. Maintain fitness during healing, support return-to-running, and prevent re-injury with data-driven training.

Stress fractures require 6-12 weeks healing:

  • Weeks 0-6: Non-impact cardio on bike, maintain fitness
  • Weeks 6-8: Medical clearance for weight-bearing
  • Weeks 8-12: Gradual return to running
  • Months 3+: Full training resumption

  • Maintain VO₂ max despite running restriction
  • Training zones for cycling/pool running
  • Minimize fitness loss during recovery

When cleared for running:

  • Treadmill VO₂ max test to establish running zones
  • Start with easy running (Zone 1-2 only)
  • Gradual volume and intensity increases
  • Monitor symptoms closely

Metatarsal (foot): 6-8 weeks non-weight-bearing
Tibia (shin): 8-12 weeks modified activity
Femoral Neck (hip): 12+ weeks, high-risk fracture
Navicular (foot): 8-12 weeks, requires careful return

VO₂ max testing supports injury prevention:

  • Know your easy pace threshold
  • Avoid training above prescribed zones
  • Build volume before intensity
  • Listen to data, not ego

Stress fractures often result from:

  • Training errors (too much, too fast)
  • Nutritional deficiencies (RMR testing can help)
  • Biomechanical issues (gait analysis needed)
  • Equipment problems (running shoes)
